Assessment of a Sick or Injured Infant and Child
This is the first of a series of four AusmedOnline educational activities that will assist registered nurses and midwives to correctly assess a sick infant and child.

The focus of this first activity is the holistic assessment and appraisal of a sick infant and child.

The educator will emphasise the need to work alongside parents and or caregivers when carrying out the assessment. The importance of prioritizing assessments and how to assess the weight of a child in an emergency situation is included in this informative activity.

An effective assessment of an infant orchild is often regarded as a specialist skill but nurses and midwives are often more broadly practising in community and/or family care. Therefore understanding differences between the assessment of an adult and that of a child is important. Applications of assessment tools for this paediatric group therefore, become important.

The aim of this educational activity is to offer nurses and midwives an opportunity to expand and consolidate professional knowledge and skills for the assessment of a sick infant or child.

This educational activity is presentedin an engaging and convenient 'school-of-one' online delivery format. The format contains:

  1. 30 minute illustrated video lecture
  2. 30 minutes of self-evaluation involving MCQs and reflection on your practice and documenting this in your CPD Organiser or other CPD/CE portfolio.
  3. Resource material including:
    • Reference list
    • Links to online audio lectures
    • Links to eBook text chapters of author
    • Links to online lectures of relevance
    • Information regarding related conferences when available

In order to claim this CPD activity, you will need to watch the video and then complete the multiple choice questions. You will need to score 80% or more in order to satisfactorily claim this activity.
