Introduction:
In this second part of session two, you will identify and evaluate sources of information on medicines. The lecturer, Dr Gowan, explains the difference between primary and secondary sources of information and reviews the application of primary literature in nursing practice. Dr Gowan discusses available online and print sources. Included, are standards to use in evaluating sources of information, and guidelines to follow to select the best information for your patient. The lecturer reviews the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration when evaluating and disseminating information about medicines to your patient.
Learning objectives:
The objectives of this session are to:
- Discuss the standards used to delineate primary from secondary literature, and the implications for nurses.
- Demonstrate ways to utilize medical literature in nursing practice.
- Explain how to evaluate literature to find the best source for a particular case.
- Outline ways to access information.
About the Speaker
Dr Jenny Gowan, PhD is a Consultant Pharmacist to the North East Valley Division of General Practice, Melbourne, Australia. A practicing pharmacist, she is a Special Lecturer in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, an Advisory Group Member of the Bachelor of Pharmacy Course and a member of the Guidelines Committee for the 2012 National Asthma Council, Asthma Management Handbook. An accredited consultant pharmacist, she conducts her own company. She was awarded the Sanofi-Aventis Gold Medal by the University of Sydney Pharmacy Practice Foundation for excellence in pharmacy practice.
