Introduction:
Methods of drug elimination are continued in this lecture with an overview of renal elimination including factors that affect elimination and reabsorption. Methods of monitoring renal elimination are reviewed. Multiple Dose Regimes are discussed, and Peak and Trough Levels, Loading Dose and Steady State are defined. You will learn the importance of monitoring medication by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The lecturer reviews methods of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM). This is an important lecture for nurses and allied health professionals as it explains fundamental concepts underpinning a drug’s efficacy.
Learning Objectives:
The objectives of this session are to:
- The importance of the duodenum to drug absorption.
- Review renal elimination in relationship to drug elimination and reabsorbtion.
- Learn the impact that poor renal function can have on drug efficacy.
- Explain how the acidity of urine can affect drug elimination.
- Explain ‘Multi Dose Regime’ and define related terminology.
- Clearly explain what a ‘loading dose’ is and the reason it is used.
- Examine qualitative and quantitative methods of medication monitoring.
- Review the application of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
- Relate these theories to nursing practice.
About the Speaker
Honorary Associate Professor Louis Roller joined the Victorian College of Pharmacy (now named; The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University) in 1963. He was variously the Associate Dean Teaching (1992-2006) of the Faculty and Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice (1992-2001) and Director of the Pharmacy Program until his retirement in December 2008. He has served on the Pharmacy Board of Victoria for 22 years and has contributed to various editions of the Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary Handbook and the Therapeutic Guidelines Antibiotic and Oral & Dental.
