Introduction:
In this lecture, Dr. Gowan gives an overview of the medicines prescribed in some of the more common disease states including Urology, Haemotology, Gastrointestinology, Cardiology, Respiratory and Endocrinology. As well, it includes a discussion of the use of hypnotics and sedatives. Dr. Gowan outlines the treatment goals for each disease state and discusses how medicine and non-medicine therapies could be utilized to meet these treatment goals. She also reviews the side effects of medicines prescribed for these disease states and the recommended methods to manage the side effects. This is a good general overview of a range of commonly used medicines and will be very useful to all nurses.
