Introduction:
In this lecture, you will review the Drug Delivery System, including the six possible methods of drug delivery. Dr Gowan gives an overview of possible benefits, risks and contraindications for each delivery method. You will learn the how to apply economic, humanistic and clinical standards to measure the health outcome for your patient. The benefit of applying evidence-based medicine is emphasised when making therapeutic decisions. There is a review of the standards used to evaluate and categorise clinical research studies.
Learning objectives:
The objectives of this session are to:
- Clearly describe the six methods of drug delivery.
- Explain the benefits and risks to the patient for each method, and how to assess the outcome for the patient.
- Know the difference between different types of medicine release e.g. biphasic, modified and slow release.
- Briefly discuss the various methods used to measure health outcome.
- Demonstrate how evidence-based medicine can be applied when making therapeutic decisions.
- Know the relevance of the ‘level of evidence’ to any medicine.
- Describe the difference between level 1 – level 3C evidence.
About the Speaker
Dr Jenny Gowan, PhD is a Consultant Pharmacist to the North East Valley Division of General Practice, Melbourne Australia. A practicing pharmacist, she is a Special Lecturer in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, an Advisory Group Member of the Bachelor of Pharmacy Course and a member of the Guidelines Committee for the 2012 National Asthma Council, Asthma Management Handbook. An accredited consultant pharmacist, she conducts her own company. She was awarded the Sanofi-Aventis Gold Medal by the University of Sydney Pharmacy Practice Foundation for excellence in pharmacy practice.

Session 1C Methods of medication delivery. I was pleased that Dr Gowan spoke about AIN or similar staff (esp in Aged care Facilities, giving the medications to the residents. It has been a conce of mine for many years, as both my parents experienced medication/person errors.
