Listening to 'Drug Actions' Parts, 1 2 & 3 will earn you 52 Mins of CPD
Introduction:
The next three sessions will look at how drugs act on the human body. Complex concepts are made easy to understand. In this lecture, you will be given an overview of biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD). You will learn both the definition and application of the terms as they relate to the reaction between drugs and the human body. The application of PK and PD on dosing and toxicology is also covered. The ADE (Absorption, Distribution and Excretion) curve is introduced and the implications of therapeutic range described. You will learn the implications of these clinical concepts to your nursing practice. This is an interesting lecture that simplifies a difficult, but important area of medication management.
Learning Objectives:
The objectives of this session are to:
- Explain the relationship between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in drug action.
- Clearly explain the importance of understanding the absorption, distribution and excretion curve.
- Describe what is meant by ‘the therapeutic range’ of a medicine and why achieving a therapeutic range is important if a drug is to be effective.
- Find out how drug toxicity can occur.
- Know what is meant by linear pharmacokinetics.
- Explain what is meant by the ‘half-life’ of a drug.
