Cardiac Electrophysiology Update: Electrical Activity of the Heart

This lecture provides a review and an update of cardiac electrophysiology. At a cellular level, the electrical activity of the heart is described. Activation and depolarisation of the cardiac cell is described and the major factors which affect this process are provided. The properties of automaticity of the cardiac cell and refractoriness in rhythm excitation are described. Electrolyte and medication influence on cardiac electrical activity and the potential of a working cardiac cell are described. This is highly informative lecture.

James McVeigh is an authorised nurse practitioner in high dependency nursing. Jim is the coordinator of the Heart Failure Service at the Prince of Wales hospital, Sydney, Australia. He was a founding member of the Australian Nurse Practitioner Association. Jim is the Chair of the Cardiac Nurses Working Group within the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. Jim’s postgraduate qualifications are: Coronary Care Certificate, Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) and a Master of Clinical Nursing.
