Types of Pain & Management: “What the Patient says Hurts”This lecture provides a detailed overview of the different types of pain experienced by patients with medical/surgical conditions. Definitions and experiences of pain are provided. The physiological and psychological aspects of pain and the unique personal experience of pain are discussed. Medications used in the management of pain are provided. Acute and chronic pain are defined and described. Nursing attitudes towards people experiencing pain are discussed. People’s stories of their experiences of pain are told. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Dale Long currently works in the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre - Diagnostic Imaging Unit. She has considerable experience in pain management, working for many years with patients requiring palliative pain relief. In addition to her considerable clinical and teaching experience, Dale is a member of the Australian Pain Society.
