The Types of Incontinence Which Can Occur in Older PeopleThis interactive lecture discusses the risk factors which lead to incontinence in older people. It states the statistics for incontinence within Australia and within the aged community. The anatomical and physiological changes that occur in normal ageing are provided and their effect upon the function and action of toileting are discussed. The different types of incontinence, including stress, and urge are described and their prevalence within the older community provided. The impact of diabetes mellitus on continence is discussed. Susan McCarthy is a Continence Nurse Advisor and Coordinator of the Victorian Continence Resource Centre. Susan was the former Coordinator of the CNC Continence Service, Peninsula Health, Victoria. Susan has a substantial background in clinical practice, research and teaching aspects of the care and management of those affected by incontinence problems.
