Medical / Surgical Nursing Specialty: Clinical ExcellenceThis lecture provides an overview of the role of the nurse in medical / surgical nursing. It argues that medical / surgical nursing is a specialty within the nursing profession, which is often unrecognised. The importance of evidence-based nursing practice is emphasised and the need for ongoing research to support clinical decision-making is discussed. The opportunities for nurses working in general medicine and general surgery to become accredited nurse practitioners are also discussed in this lecture. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Dr Joy Lyneham, RN, PhD, is a senior lecturer and master of nursing coordinator at the school of nursing and midwifery at Monash University. Dr Lyneham has a substantial clinical, teaching and research background in emergency nursing. Her doctoral thesis examined the impact of violent behaviours on nursing staff in emergency departments.
