Child Abuse: Physical, Sexual, Emotional Abuse and NeglectThis session begins with a clear definition of child abuse. Four types of child abuse are described and discussed. Statistics are stated to provide an overview of this serious health issue. Stories of children who have an abuse history are shared. This challenging and emotive session provides excellent assessment skills and strategies to facilitate appropriate nursing care of an abused child. Professional responsibilities in reporting and moral responses are discussed. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Gerry Silk trained at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London, and has more than 32 years paediatric nursing experience, including 16 years in the Emergency Department of the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. Gerry currently works as a paediatric nurse educator in Melbourne. Her teaching is consistently highly evaluated by participants who attend her lectures. Gerry is the author of the highly successful Ausmed book entitled 'Care of Sick Children: A Basic Guide'.
