Care of Patients with Percutaneous Endoscopy Gastrostomy TubeThis lecture discusses the nursing care of a person with a PEG tube. The psychological aspects of not being able to eat are discussed. Strategies are provided for dealing with problems related to interpersonal, cultural and social aspects of eating. The nursing care of a person’s mouth when they have a PEG tube is explained. The advantages of using percutaneous endoscopy gastrostomy for a young girl with cerebral palsy are described. Information is provided about the gastrostomy information support service and self help group. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Patsy Montgomery is a registered nurse, midwife and stomal therapist. Patsy has a degree in education from Monash University, Melbourne. She is the co-founder of a gastrostomy information support service. Patsy is the coordinator and clinical nurse consultant for the Abbott Nutritional Service and President of Peninsula Ostomy Association (Melbourne). Patsy provides a support service for tube fed patients and provides advice and support for the families and carers of patients. Patsy is a vibrant and continually highly evaluated teacher.
