Safely Transferring Seriously Ill or Injured Children

This lecture provides information about how to safely transfer seriously ill or injured children. Factors to consider in preparation of a child for transfer and the main risks associated with transferring a child are identified and discussed. Strategies to prevent transfer morbidities are provided. The need to stabilise the child’s or infants condition prior to transferring is emphasised in this lecture. Considerations when deciding on the mode of transport and the need for appropriate family involvement are discussed.

• Assessment of a child or infant with burns or scalds
• Techniques to assess degree of burn and/ or scald (paediatrics)
• Immediate nursing care and management strategies in the care of children with burns and scalds

Speaker: Gerry Silk
Gerry Silk was educated at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London, and has more than 32 years paediatric nursing experience, including 16 years in the Emergency Department of the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Gerry currently works as a paediatric nurse educator in Melbourne. Her teaching is consistently highly evaluated by participants who attend her lectures. Gerry is the author of the highly successful Ausmed book entitled 'Care of Sick Children: A Basic Guide'.
