Diabetes Mellitus is a disorder in which the metabolism of glucose is impaired. Under normal circumstances, the hormone insulin regulates the removal of glucose from the blood so that it can be transported throughout the body and used for energy. People with diabetes either do not produce enough insulin, or are unable to properly use it. As a result, glucose remains in the bood at higher than normal levels and cuases progressive damages to the vascular systems of vital organs. Further, the cells of the body are not properly supplied with the energy from glucose that is needed for proper metabolism. Complications of uncontrolled diabetes can include ketoacidosis, water and electrolyte imbalance, kidney and heart disease, retinopathy and neuropathy.
