Personality disorders: Maladaptive responses to anxietyIn this lecture a definition of personality is provided. How personality is formed is discussed. Differing theories of what contributes to the formation of personality are explained. How culture and physiology impact on personality and the dynamic nature of ‘the human experience’ is discussed. Adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies and mental defensive mechanisms are discussed. Maladaptive responses to anxiety which manifest in interpersonal and social context are described. This lecture uses anecdotal stories to help explain complex concepts. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Patricia Awty is a Nurse Consultant and Educator with extensive hospital and university based experience as a clinician, teacher and lecturer. She is a qualified general and psychiatric nurse who has a Master of Health Science and a special interest in the psychodynamics of therapeutic relationships and care.
