Nursing Assessment of Types of Pain & Management Options
This lecture discusses pain scales and their usefulness in assessing pain levels. The importance of nurse’s communication skills in the process of assessing the level and type of pain experienced by patients is emphasised. Nursing documentation of the patient’s pain experienced is discussed. The importance of the patient’s palliative and provocative pain history, along with their previous medication usage is discussed. Medications used in the management of differing types of pain are described and discussed in detail.

Dale Long has 5 years experience working as the Pain Management Coordinator at Greenslopes Private Hospital, Brisbane and prior to this Dale worked in cancer care and palliative care for 15 years. Currently Dale works in the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre - Diagnostic Imaging Unit. In addition to her considerable clinical and teaching experience, Dale is a member of the Australian Pain Society.
