Difficulties on the Frontlines: Nurses & Indigenous HealthThis lecture discusses the profound impact that nurses have in promoting Indigenous well-being. It identifies and explores some of the problems that prevent nurses providing the best care. In this passionate and challenging lecture, statistics of Indigenous mortality and morbidity rates are provided. Major health issues affecting Indigenous people are identified and strategies to address these problems are provided. The importance of nurses breaking the cycle of chronic poor health amongst these populations are emphasised in this lecture. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Lesley Salem is currently involved in the ‘Integrated Chronic Care for Aboriginal People Program’, Hunter, New England Health, NSW, Australia. Lesley is a descendant of the Wonaruah Nation in NSW. She was the Federal Indigenous Women’s delegate on the Diplomatic Party to the United Nations for the 53rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Lesley has a Master of Nursing Science (Research), Graduate Diploma of Nursing Science, Graduate Certificate in Nursing Science-Apheresis, Hospital Certificate in Nephrology and Transplantation.
