Talking Sex – The Importance of Nurses Understanding Sex and SexualityThis session discusses the importance of nurses understanding sex and sexuality in relation to general health care. It outlines ‘What is sexual health?’ and why it is important that nurses are able to talk about sex with their patients. This is a frank and dynamic discussion exploring the taboos about the subject and providing clarity about the difference between sex and sexuality. In normalising this subject it is hoped stigma and discrimination is reduced and professional holistic care facilitated. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Speaker: Judith DeanJudith Dean is a State Nurse Educator, from the Sexual Health Services, Queensland Health. Judith is also the Sexual Health Program Convener at Griffith University and holds a joint position between Queensland Health and Griffith University. Judith has worked in the area of sexual health for many years and has a particular interest and experience in indigenous health, remote and rural health and public health including international humanitarian aid work.
