How Remote Nurses Worldwide Impact on the ProfessionThis lecture discusses how the independence of nurses, past and present, who work in remote areas of the world has enhanced our understanding of the scope of nursing practice. Examples of nurses working in the Outer Hebrides (UK), Queensland (Australia) and Newfoundland (Canada) are presented. The nature of the work undertaken by these nurses in the outback of Australia is described. The nurse’s enormous responsibility and freedom is analysed and acknowledged in this informative session. Dr Christine Hallett (PhD, BNurs, BA, RGN, DnCert, HVCert) author of “Celebrating Nursing: A Visual History”. Christine is the Director of the Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Manchester, UK. A qualified nurse and health visitor, she worked as a community nurse before moving into the university sector. She became a full-time lecturer in nursing in 1993, and has worked in nurse education for over 15 years. Christine has PhDs in Nursing and History.
