Drugs Used in Affective Disorders, Anti-Depressant Medications and Mood StabilisersBruce Collier facilitated this session which was titled Common Medications and Therapies. This extract is called Drugs Used in Affective Disorders - Anti-Depressant Medications and Mood Stabilisers. This session discusses recent research into the pathophysiological changes in the brain of people diagnosed with mental illness. After giving a broad overview of depressive illness, Bruce outlines the main groups of anti-depressant medications used in the reduction in the symptoms of depression. The groups of Mono Amine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI’s), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and the Tricyclic Anti-depressants are discussed. Adverse reactions and side effects of these medications are outlined. Bruce also discusses the groups of drugs called 'Mood Stabilisers' which are used in the treatment and care of people diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorders. Discussing what is meant by affective disorders, Bruce talks about the therapeutic use of medications in the care of people with this diagnosis.
