This session provides information about the most common minor injuries and traumas seen in children who present to hospital emergency departments. It details a number of first aid measures specifically useful for children. Nursing care strategies which facilitate cooperation in traumatised children are provided. Communication skills utilised in assessing pain in a child are described. Types of fractures which occur in children are also described. This is a highly informative session.

Gerry Silk trained at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London, and has more than 32 years paediatric nursing experience, including 16 years in the Emergency Department of the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. Gerry currently works as a paediatric nurse educator in Melbourne. Her teaching is consistently highly evaluated by participants who attend her lectures. Gerry is the author of the highly successful Ausmed book entitled 'Care of Sick Children: A Basic Guide'.
