An Overview of Substance AbuseLisa Barling facilitated this session which was entitled "When Substance Abuse Causes Problems." This extract is called An Overview of Substance Abuse. Lisa Barling is a Clinical Nurse Consultant specialising in Dual Diagnosis, Alcohol and Drug Addiction. In this session, Lisa gives an overview of the impacts of substance abuse and discusses the common drugs of abuse. She explores the physical impact upon the human body of these drugs along with the social implications of drug abuse. Lisa explores why a person may abuse drugs and how this behaviour alters their perception. A biopsychosocial perspective of addiction is portrayed and the cultural implications of addiction are explored. Lisa talks about psychological dependence and physiological dependence along with the concept of craving.
