An Overview of Medications used in PsychiatryBruce Collier facilitated this session which was titled Common medications and Therapies. This extract is called An Overview of Medications used in Psychiatry. In this session Bruce gives a broad overview of the medications commonly used in psychiatry, which he refers to as 'Psychotropic Medications’. Bruce talks about the therapeutic use of anti-depressant drugs, including their drug group and generic names. Bruce also gives an overview of the typical and atypical 'anti-psychotic' medications and discusses the issue of non-compliance in taking prescribed medications by patients within mental health care services. Mood stabilisers and their use in reducing symptoms in people diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder is reflected upon. The mood stabiliser, and 'salt' Lithium Carbonate is discussed.
