Understanding Portion Size for Children
In Australia, childhood obesity has hit epidemic levels, with more than 15% of girls and 20% of boys considered obese. Health implications for these children, including diabetes, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalance and sleep disorders, are as serious as for obese adults. Nurses as both care givers and health educators are key players in the fight to curb this trend. In addition to providing treatment for the side effects of obesity, nurses can teach their young patients how to reverse the effects of obesity by incorporating a healthier diet, portion control and exercise in their diet.
