The Impact of Continence on the Quality of a Person’s LifeThis highly interactive lecture discusses the impact of incontinence on the quality of a person’s life. Incontinence is clearly defined. The major factors that cause incontinence and goals of continence assessment activities are identified. The anatomy and physiology of the urinary system is reviewed. Nursing measures to promote continence are provided. The balance between duty of care and encouraging independence is discussed. The impact of mobility, dementia and disturbances in perception on continence are discussed. The main concepts explored in this session are:
Susan McCarthy is a Continence Nurse Advisor and Coordinator of the Victorian Continence Resource Centre. Susan was the former Coordinator of the CNC Continence Service, Peninsula Health, Victoria. Susan has a substantial background in clinical practice, research and teaching care and management of those affected by incontinence problems.
